"For Whom the Bell Tolls (two images from the archives at Diário de Notícias )- A new inquiry commissioned by the French Catholic Church in 2018 has found that its clergy have abused 216 000 children since 1950. Let me say that number again: two hundred sixteen thousand children, victims of 2900 to 3200 abusers. The Church failed to prevent and report it at the time. So when are we conducting the same kind of inquiry in the rest of Europe? I’m specially curious as to what we will find in my own country, Portugal, as well as Spain and Italy, the main catholic countries.
